Carmelite Sister Maria Aracela Lopez, 77, died on December 22, 2023 in Chicago.
Born in Jalisco, Mexico, she entered the congregation of the Carmelite Order in Peru, Illinois in the 1980's to pursue a life of prayer. She dedicated her life to the Catholic faith and service, caring for the aged and infirmed. Sister Aracela spent most of her years of service in the Carmelite Sister Convent in Houston, Texas, but traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, to serve in the Carmelite Monastery of St. Teresa de Jesus for several years.
In her younger years, she owned a boutique and enjoyed fashion design, volleyball, martial arts, traveling and spending time with her nieces and nephews. She always cherished the holidays and time spent with her family and her Carmelite Sisters. Sister Aracela lived a good life, and was excited to live every day.
She is survived by her sisters, Elvira Sandoval, Maria Antonia Gaytan and Alicia Torres, her brother, Jose A. Lopez, many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfonso and Eva Lopez.
Visitation to take place Tuesday, December 26, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Sagrada Familia Funeral Home, 4950 W. 79th St. Burbank, IL 60459. Funeral to follow Wednesday, December 27, 2023. Viewing at 10:00 a.m. followed directly by the funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church, 5511 S Sawyer Ave, Chicago, IL 60629.
